Taekwondo for Children
Over the years, we have seen first-hand the benefits taekwondo provides for toddlers, children and youth/teenagers enrolled in regular martial arts programs. Children who participate in some form of martial arts tend to perform better socially, excel above their peers academically and generally have a higher self-esteem and more positive relationships with their teachers, friends and family members.
Self-Discipline
The discipline you impose on yourself in order to meet goals are more enduring than any discipline dictated by someone else. Students in our taekwondo program are expected to meet a variety of challenges and objectives, which requires increasing self-discipline with each new level. Our trainers and lead instructor, Mr. Dang, help students to be motivated, diligent and persistent. As students rise in rank, they become role models for newer and younger students – and the examples they set form the basis for further advancement and achievements.
Self-Confidence
As students master difficult Tae Kwon Do skills or pass complicated reviews to promote to the next belt level, they gain a sense of real achievement. While we encourage all of our students to interact, support and socialize like any other sport, the pace and success of each student is determined by their personal goals and ability. Self-discipline coupled with self-confidence leads to a great self-esteem that helps children stay on the right track. In fact, this makes them less likely to act out violently or be bullied by peer pressure.
Self-Defense
Children today are vulnerable to all sorts of predators. In Tae Kwon Do, we teach them techniques that can effectively ward off an attack by someone. More importantly, they learn to keep their wits and practice basic self-preservation (yelling “Fire!” when attacked because it draws more attention; then running away). As they mature and their senses become more acute from Tae Kwon Do training, our students are able to spot potential dangers more readily and are equipped to confront those with confidence and calm. Students are strongly encouraged to use Tae Kwon Do skills only for self-defense – not as a means to cause undue harm or danger to anyone. Fighting rarely is a problem with our students and they know if they get into a fight, they face suspension from class and other appropriate disciplinary measures.
Fitness
Many children don’t get exercise these days – outside of navigating the buttons on a Wii game console. Just 45 minutes to one hour of Tae Kwon Do a day will improve their strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance – something that can be applied to other sports and activities in your child’s life. Although there is competition in Tae Kwon Do, there is no pressure to win or make the team. Even kids who have never done anything athletic in their lives can excel at Tae Kwon Do if they keep trying. But will also help more natural athletes, build skills such as hand-eye coordination, that carry over into other sports.
